What are the facilities provided and challenges faced by Indian para athletes?
While cricket gets all the hype and glamour, most other games and athletes lose getting the kind of attention and help which is actually required, in India. And the things are further sour when it comes to para athletes. What kind of facilities and treatments do para athletes get, is always a question. Several instances have come into picture about the substandard facilities provided to the differently-abled athletes.
The athletes were put up in shabby accommodations without even basic facilities of drinking water, food, dysfunctional toilets and sanitation. Many of these facilities did not even have wheel-chair ramps for the athletes. Also, there is no adequate infrastructure for disabled.
A participant athlete was quoted by ANI saying, “Not at all satisfied with arrangements, no bathrooms, we’ve been here for 3 days and rooms haven’t been cleaned yet. We are facing difficulty in using washrooms and bathrooms, lack of water, no fans, lot of mosquitoes.”
It’s not just the absence of these facilities, but the government, media and corporates are also lagging to promote the development of these para athletes. Investors can promote it as a CSR activity help disable in the sport. Even schools can have programs for disabled sports.
Yet another problem for disabled athletes is lack of trained coaches. And some coaches who have some experience about training do not come forward due to very less incentives. These problems are like a chain which lead to bringing down the level of athletes. Hence, it is indeed important to bring a long-lasting solution to these problems of para athletes.
