Varun Bhati & Mariyappan Thangavelu, the para athletes honored with The Arjuna Award
Para high jumpers Varun Singh Bhati and Mariyappan Thangavelu feature in this year’s list of Arjuna awardees. The awards instituted by the Government of India recognize outstanding individual contribution to sports. The awards were given away by President President Ram Nath Kovind at an impressive ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29th, the National Sports Day.
22 year old Varun Singh Bhati competes in the T-42 category and is an Asian record holder. His impressive list of accomplishments includes gold medals at the 2014 China Open Athletics Championship, and 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship, and bronze medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and 2017 World Para Athletics Championships.
For Mariyappan Thangavelu 2017 has been one of twin honours. The 22 year old received the country’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padmashree, as well, this year! Thangavelu who competes in the T-42 category bagged gold at the 2016 Summer Paralympic games held in Rio de Janeiro.
